ITEMS
FOR SALE

We occasionally receive some beautiful local crafts from our network in Kilifi County that we like to sell here in the UK. The money raised goes directly back to the maker, helping to support and showcase some of their amazing work.

FOLKTALES FROM KILIFI.

Folktales From Kilifi is the Akili Trust's first book, published to raise money for bursary students, librarians and libraries in Kilifi, Kenya.

We asked Akili bursary students to pen folktales told to them by their families, and collected the 22 wonderful illustrated stories together into a book.

£20 per copy, with discounts on bulk orders. £3.70 postage and packaging.

GARMENTS.

The tailor who makes these items, George, works in Watamu in a small workshop with others. He plans to start up his own workshop soon.

The fabric used for them is called 'leso', 'khanga' or 'kitenge' - all historic to Kilifi County. Their blend of rich colours and patterns is one-of-a-kind.

"The people of Kilifi make clothing designs with these fabrics; shirts, shorts, dresses, overalls. And women in Kilifi wrap them around their waist and shoulders and make very unique headgear. They are mostly worn on special occasions; wedding parties/church services and to console others" - Fred Kittu

SOAPS.

Dabaso Community Initiative

Members of the Community Unit have been trained to make soap with coconut oil and neem (mkilifi/ muarubaini, Azadiracta indica).

Neem is highly effective in preventing and treating heat rash, eczema, bacterial and fungal skin infections, scabies and jiggers.

The group sells the soap within the community to ensure everyone has access to soap, and creates some income for the group to sustain it.

These bags and masks have been designed and created by Charo Mwamure. While the masks were made in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the bags are an add-on, to ensure that all excess fabric was used with zero going to waste.
