I want to thank everyone who has helped with the film, particularly our partners in Media Trust for the support that they have given to this project.

Trustee visit - May 2011

dab - outside 3Lucy Evans, one of the Akili trustees, visited Kenya in May 2011.  She was delighted to see the progress that both libraries have made in improving the library environments.

You will be able to see the mural painted on the wall at Dabaso and the renovated makuti shelters in the beautiful garden at Kakuyuni.

Both libraries are being very well used with constantly increasing reader numbers.

PR statement

The Akili Trust is a British charity set up to develop community libraries in rural Kenya. We have NGO status in Kenya as ‘Akili Community Libraries’, where we now have two established and fully functioning libraries in Coastal Province, and a third about to be set up in a secondary school. These libraries are making a positive impact in their communities and are used regularly by classes in the school, children from local schools and the adult community. Electricity is currently being installed in the area and this will have an enormous impact on traditional farming communities who up to now have had very little access to television and the internet. We are funding the electricity in both libraries, which will enable people to read after dark.

Library news 2

New Library

We are working in partnership with Canon Mweri Secondary School to open a new library in 2011. The school will fund the librarian position and the Akili Trust will supply the resources.

We are currently collecting books and resources for this to be included in our next shipment to Kenya.

Bursary students

We are delighted that our first two bursary students have scored very highly in their end of secondary school exams and should be able to get university places because of this.

Michael Rosen, Akili's new patron

Mike Rosen, the well known broadcaster, academic and children's author, and the UK's previous Children's Laureate, has agreed to become a patron of the Trust.

Mike is passionate about making connections between children and words, both in written or spoken form, to create an enthusiasm for reading.  He is a keen advocate of children's libraries and is enthusiastic about the possibilities of supporting a network of libraries in Kenya.
