Akili Events Newsletter – November 2012

A group of six of us have recently returned from a very successful trip and there will be an update on the Akili website in the next few weeks with photos, videos, poems and letters from our bursary students and their families.

Italian Opera Dinner

Thanks to everyone involved in the Italian Opera Dinner on 10 November. It was a hugely enjoyable evening and we raised over £3000, helped by a very generously funded auction. The music, food, wine and company were much appreciated by all. The biographical notes on the singers and the artist who donated a print to the auction can be found on the Akili website.

Cricket Tournament

Thanks to the participants in the Broken Wicket cricket festival that took place at North Middlesex Cricket Club at the end of September. Each player donated half of the match fee to Akili.

Great Northern Run

Once again Diane Rogan Sofer impressed us all with both her timing and the amount she raised in this year’s run.

Panettone and Olive Oil for Akili

Following last year’s successful sales, Peter Hodgson has re-ordered the Flamigni Panettone and Quattrociocchi Olive Oil. It will be available to Akili supporters directly through him from November. By making a large order, Peter is able to keep prices down and is kindly donating a proportion of each sale to Akili. The Olive Oil will be priced according to the size, 500ml, 750ml and 5 litres.
For orders and more details please contact Peter directly (0208 458 1311)

Individual Bursary Sponsorship

The recent visit demonstrated how important the bursary programme is and how much it is valued by the communities. Secondary education is still only accessed by a minority in Coast province. We talked to the students about developing closer links with them and have agreed that they will write an annual letter to sponsors updating on their progress. This will also give an opportunity for them to raise questions or issues with us. We are keen to encourage you to participate in this scheme, either as a mentor or by directly sponsor an individual student – £280 per year on average.
