The key feature of the Akili libraries is that they are staffed on a full time basis. Our librarians are local people who we have trained to manage the library and work with the students in the school. They are paid on a local Kenyan salary. Each library has a man and a woman on the staff team, which we feel is a vital step towards equality. Mohamed Atman, our first library assistant, left in the summer of 2008 to join the Kenyan army, though he still keeps in touch with the library's work. There is a new post for a computer trainer in each library. |
